THE COVE
Before you decided to cruise on down to Sea World, or go on a tropical vacation and pay to swim with, and kiss
captive dolphins… check out this new movie "The Cove:"
The
Cove follows a
team of activists and filmmakers as they infiltrate a heavily-guarded cove in Taiji, Japan. In this remote
village they witness and document activities deliberately being hidden from the public: More than 20,000
dolphins and porpoises are being slaughtered each year and their meat, containing toxic levels of mercury, is
being sold as food in Japan, often times labeled as whale meat.
The majority of the world is not aware this is happening. The Taiji cove is blocked off from the public. Cameras
are not allowed inside and the media does not cover the story.
Meet the man behind the movie who has dedicated his life to fighting for the 23,000 dolphins that die every year in
the Taiji cove in Japan.
You may know Richard O’Barry from the famous 60’s TV show, Flipper (at that time, the world’s best dolphin
trainer).

Richard
has spent ten years of this life working for the dolphin captivity industry, and has since then spent the last
38 years fighting against it.
Working back in the 60’s for the Miami Sea Aquarium, Richard captured and trained several dolphins from the wild
for the simple purpose of entertaining people. When Kathy, the dolphin who played Flipper took her own life in his
arms, he realized the sadness and misery that captivity causes to wild animals. Since then Richard has gone to jail
over and over again trying to free captive dolphins and fight for their existence.
